Homes echo our characters, our history and our aspirations. From simple structures to complete interiors, I aim to design and create pieces to sit comfortably in your individual space. My creativity is borne out of a passion for both 'form' and 'wood'. A respect for nature and a belief in supporting local small economies means I always use sustainably produced wood (grown and harvested locally where possible) and natural products to minimise my impact on the environment.

Richard and Mary Kennedy design and make a wide range of furniture and other wooden items. We draw inspiration from many sources to produce a distinctive and orginal style. The products range from painted cupboards to trays, mirrors, jewellery and trinket boxes, book shelves etc. One speciality includes House boxes: From your photos we make a wooden box in the shape of your house, with the roof as lid, and each face painted in every detail. Unusual shapes no problem. Our house boxes are already in collections around the world. Priced from £18, send photographs for a quotation.
Using local timber from a renewable source, we make tables, dressers, cupboards, bookcases etc, by hand, in our garden workshop.
We sell direct to the public, are pleased to accept commissions, and can sell some items to trade. We have a permanent stall in the Cockermouth Craft And Gift Centre, and exhibit at local fairs and agricultural shows.
Visitors are welcome, please use town car parks and phone in advance.

Much of the furniture crafted in the middle 17th century, the Jacobean period, was produced generally by local 'joyners' using local materials. Oak was the main timber, and carving a much used decoration. The fact that many pieces can be accurately dated and traced to original owners stems from the practice of carving initials and the dating of individual products. Oak will last many hundereds of years and the craftsmanship of these 'joyners' has ensured that many wonderful examples survive to this day.

We work in most of the English hardwoods but specialize in 16th century English Oak designs. Products are made using traditional tools, materials and methods. Our green oak fire surrounds are built to enhance a 16th century room but are equally 'at home' in a modern house.
Some examples of products: wooden fire surrounds and tables with carvings, oak and mahogany dressers, ornaments and cupboards.

MJ Cabinnet Makers was established out of a desire to design and create a wide range of furniture for the customer seeking a high standard of quality. The designer and maker prides himself in the skill of combining traditional techniques with contemporary design.
Every piece is made from local hardwoods such as Oak, Ash, Elm and Sycamore, and comes with a 'history scroll' giving the origins of the wood used, the date and the maker. The MJ logo is hand carved into every piece of furniture, which is also stamped with a number if it is part of a range, making each piece unique and individual.
MJ Cabinet Makers try to use local hardwoods that have been felled out of necessity, for example storm damaged or trees that are in a dangerous position. Believing that the conservation of native forestry is important, materials are only purchased from a local supplier who has a replanting program.

The hallmark of Ian Laval's furniture is the use of strikingly decorative sawn burr and crotch veneers, which he often uses in matched quarters in tops and on drawer-fronts. He is constantly on the look-out for interesting features revealed in his timber-sawing process. The veneers are sawn one-eighth of an inch thick and laid on a ground of solid timber of the same species. Light inlays of holly and dark ones of bog-oak, or occasionally walnut, come from his own trees.
All of the designs are Ian Laval's own, leaning on tradition; not consciously copying or reproducing but interpreting old functions and proportions in a more current setting. All of them make a frame in which to display the exciting shapes and colours of natural wood.

A unique seat on three legs and V-shaped rockers cleverly designed to encourage natural body use and freedom of movement - rather than propping you in a fixed position like most chairs.
The rockers allow the seat angle to adjust exactly to suit your height. By moving a little forward or back, you can change the angle, to vary where you feel supported, whenever you like. Rock forward easily onto your feet and stand in one smooth movement. This is easier than on a fixed seat. It is also kinder on your knees and hips. 'Vee' shaped rockers give you more foot room than almost any other seat, you can move your feet around whenever you choose. No chair legs or castors catching your heels when you want to stand. No knee rests to put pressure on your knees and fix your legs in one position.
